VCR Recording Tips

You have installed ITC’s Best Seat Home Entertainment and you’re wondering how to record. Interestingly enough, your television and VCR still work like they always have—just as you can watch television on certain TV channels (now 4, 7, and 13), you can tape on those same TV channels. The operational difference is that your Best Seat Gateway lets you change what appears on those three TV channels.

To record what you’re watching:

  1. Using your VCR remote, set your VCR to the appropriate TV channel (4, 7, or 13).
  2. Using your Best Seat remote, choose the television show you want to record.
  3. Start your VCR’s recording function, and when you’re done taping, stop the VCR.

To watch what you recorded:

  1. Rewind the tape.
  2. Your VCR probably plays to your TV’s channel 4, so make sure your TV is on channel 4, and start your VCR’s play function.
  3. If you don’t see your tape playing, use the TV/VCR button ( on your VCR or VCR remote) to change what your VCR is sending to your television.

To watch something else on a different channel while you’re taping:

Please don’t use the Best Seat remote that you just used to set up your recording--it will change what you are taping.

  1. Since your TV can receive another program on a different channel (7 or 13, for instance) use your television remote or the controls on your television to change to one of those channels. Get the Best Seat remote that controls the channel you selected (it may be in another room) and tune to the Best Seat program you wanted to watch.
  2. When you finish , remember to tune your TV back to the original channel and return the borrowed Next Level remote to the proper room.

To set up a future recording:

You probably already know how to program your VCR to tape an upcoming event. A similar feature can be found in your Best Seat Gateway.

  1. Using the Best Seat remote and on-screen guide, highlight the title you want to tape.
  2. Push ‘info’ on your remote
  3. Highlight and select ‘actions’
  4. Highlight and select ‘autotune’
  5. Highlight and select ‘one-time’, ‘mon-fri’, or ‘once a day’.

Your Gateway will now automatically tune to the show you have selected. Once you have set your VCR to tape ( from the correct channel) at the same time, you’re done.

If you are recording on a VCR located near the Best Seat Gateway that is always set to record on channel 4, it’s even easier.

  1. Once again, use the Best Seat remote and on-screen guide to highlight the title you want to tape.
  2. Push ‘info’ on your remote.
  3. Highlight and select ‘actions’.
  4. Highlight and select ‘record this show'.
  5. Highlight and select ‘one-time’, ‘mon-fri’, or ‘once a day’.

Your Gateway will now automatically turn your VCR on, tune to the show you have selected, record the show, and turn the VCR off. Just remember to leave the VCR off with a blank tape in place for your recording.

To program your Best Seat Remote to turn your television on and off, and adjust the volume:

  1. Turn your television on.
  2. Push and hold the ‘mute’ button on the Best Seat Remote until the red light on the remote blinks.
  3. Push the ‘Power’ button on the Best Seat Remote. The red light will stay on.
  4. Using the Best Seat Remote, push the ‘up arrow’ (above the ‘select’ button) repeatedly until your
  5. television turns off.
  6. Push the ‘select’ button on your Best Seat Remote to ‘memorize’ the remote code you have found.
  7. Your Best Seat Remote should now turn your television on, adjust the volume, and turn it off.

To program your Best Seat Gateway to record from your VCR:

  1. Turn your television on.
  2. Using your Best Seat Remote, push ‘menu’.
  3. Highlight and select ‘Set Up The Box’
  4. Highlight and select ‘Set Up The VCR’
  5. Highlight and select ‘Complete VCR Setup’
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your VCR setup.

Important Notes:

If you use your Best Seat Remote to turn off your television, the Best Seat channel automatically changes to channel 2 (RIC). If you turn off your television manually, or with the Television Remote , the Gateway channel doesn't’t change. This can be handy if want your VCR to tape an upcoming show but you don’t want to set up an auto-tune.

Remember, if the picture is fuzzy, use the TV/VCR button on your VCR to clear it up.

The interactive on-screen guide function of your Best Seat Gateway is much easier to navigate if you use the ‘page up’ and ‘page down’ buttons in the upper right hand corner of the Best Seat Remote .

Your Best Seat remotes should be labeled so you know what TV channel and what television each is programmed to operate.

If you have set an auto-tune, and want to change it, pick up the Best Seat remote that controls the channel that you want to change, press and hold the ‘select’ button. Instructions will appear that will allow you to change what is showing.
